Tarzan (1999): Jungle Animation and Disney Collecting at the Millennium
Explore Disney's 1999 animated Tarzan and its place in the studio's late-1990s storytelling and merchandise history.
The film and its era
Disney released its animated Tarzan in 1999, telling the story of a young man raised among gorillas and his encounters with the human world.
Why its imagery endures
Tarzan, Jane, Terk, and the jungle environment lend themselves to action figures, plush, books, and animation art with a very different aesthetic from fairy-tale merchandise.
Collector notes
Collectors documenting the 1990s can group Tarzan with other films of the decade while keeping merchandise manufacturing dates separate from the film's release year.
